       New York pastor sparks Zambia uproar with HIV/AIDS link to sin

Lusaka (ENI). New York pastor Carter Conlon of the Times Square Church caused consternation among Zambian church leaders when he declared that to a large extent, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which has badly hit the southern African country, had been a question of sin. Conlon was in Zambia with a 250-member delegation from the charismatic church of New York, in late October, for a three-day evangelistic tour, in Lusaka. On arrival he addressed journalists at the capital's international airport, saying: "The HIV/AIDS is to a large extent, a question of sin because when people run away from the government of God, the result was often fornication and sin."

       Arafat laid to rest as church leaders in Holy Land pray for peace

Ramallah (ENI). Yasser Arafat was described by Jerusalem church leaders as the "symbol of his people", as a chaotic funeral at his West Bank headquarters was cut short to avoid a near riot when thousands of Palestinians stormed the compound to bid farewell to their leader. Palestinian police fired bullets into the air from automatic rifles to prevent a stampede as two Egyptian helicopters landed in Arafat's Ramallah headquarters.

       Church and media in Bulgaria urged to overcome legacy of atheism

Sofia (ENI). The church and media can cooperate in eliminating the atheistic legacy of communism and building spiritual enlightenment, a senior Bulgarian lawmaker has told a conference on church and media relations. Lachezar Toshev, the head of Bulgaria's parliamentary committee on religious matters, said the conference was "overdue". He said the church and media could help in bringing spiritual enlightenment.

       New Dutch Bible translation is best-seller

Amsterdam (ENI). A new Dutch translation of the Bible has catapulted into the best-seller lists in the Netherlands, despite survey findings that show a continuing decline in church attendance in the country. The first copy of the New Bible Translation was presented to Dutch monarch Queen Beatrix in Rotterdam on 27 October and launched two days later in Antwerp for the Belgian market.

       Indian Christian leader urges Bush to promote religious freedom

New Delhi (ENI). A prominent Christian human rights campaigner in India has welcomed the re-election of US President George W. Bush and has called on the US leader to promote religious freedom in South Asia. Countries such as Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar and India "all share a common trait of the majority communities, often with state connivance, targeting Christians," said John Dayal, president of the All India Catholic Union and secretary general of the ecumenical All India Christian Council, in a message to the US president.

       Ecumenical Patriarch tells UK Catholics of delight at Pope's gesture

Istanbul (ENI). Leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Britain say they are happy the Ecumenical Patriarch - the spiritual leader of Orthodox Christians - has spoken of his "great delight" at Pope John Paul II's gesture whereby the remains of two of Christianity's most important saints are to be returned to Istanbul from the Vatican at the end of this month. "We praise the Pope for his courage and willingness to promote dialogue between Christians in the East and the West and it is my deepest hope that he will visit us soon," Patriarch Bartholomeos I of Constantinople said at his Istanbul headquarters, to a group of more than 30 visiting Catholics and others from Britain.

        Today, on the feast of Sts. Cosmas and Damian (the Holy Unmercenary Physicians), the first patron saint's day of Zociste Monastery since the recent return of the monks to the burned ruins of this holy shrine was celebrated…. Bishop Teodosije of Lipljan and the clergy and monastics of the Diocese of Raska-Prizren and Kosovo-Metohija served Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the nearby Serb village of Velika Hoca in the church of the Holy Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stefan…. The monastery of Sts. Cosmas and Damian (the Unmercenary Physicians) in Zociste was built in the 14th century. It is mentioned for the first time in the charter of the Holy King Stefan of Decani from 1327. The Holy King turned over the monastery and surrounding land for the use of the Serbian monastery of Chilandar on the Holy Mountain of Athos as its monastery metoh, or estate. The church and monks' quarters were destroyed many times throughout history. In summer 1999 Albanian extremists completely destroyed the church with its remnants of frescoes dating back to the 14th century, and set fire to the monks' quarters. Since then until one month ago the monastery was abandoned because the monks were prevented from returning. Thanks to efforts on the part of KFOR representatives and the agreement of local municipal authorities, a brotherhood of three monks returned headed by Protosingel Petar, the administrator of the monastery of Djurdjevi Stupovi (the Pillars of St. George) and the former abbot of Zociste Monastery before the war.

الاحتفال بعيد القديسين قزما ودميانوس، شفيعي دير "جوشيست" في كوسوفو، بمناسبة عودة بعض رهبانه إليه، بعد تدميره الأخير في صيف 1999. يعود بناء الدير إلى القرن الرابع عشر.

        Council of Europe secretary general Terry Davis and Petersen expressed their regret because of the Serbian Orthodox Church's decision to withdraw its signature from a memorandum on the restoration of monuments destroyed during March violence on the part of extremist Albanians. Approximately 30 Orthodox churches and monasteries were destroyed at that time. "We could not accept work on the restoration of our churches and monasteries by someone without the acquiescence and participation of our institutions in Serbia, the Institute for the Protection of Monuments and the Serbian Orthodox Church, the owner of these buildings," emphasized Bishop Artemije.

الأمانة العامة للمجلس الأوروبي تعرب عن أسفها لسحب الكنيسة الصربية توقيعها من المذكرة حول إعادة أعمار ما يقارب (30) كنيسة دمرتها أعمال العنف التي قادها المتطرفون الألبان في كوسوفو خلال شهر آذار المنصرم. الأسقف أرتميج لم يقبل أن تتم أعمال الترميم دون مشاركة المؤسسات الصربية والكنيسة الصربية.

كثر الحديث في الآونة الأخيرة عبر وسائل الإعلام، وبالأخص البرامج السياسية المتلفزة، عن حركة في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية تدعى بـ ”الصهيونية المسيحية” اقترن اسمها بالدعم العلني، سياسيا وماديا، لإسرائيل وتأثيرها المباشر على صنع القرار حيال الشرق الأوسط في أروقة الإدارات الأميركية. “الصهيونيون المسيحيون: على الطريق إلى هرمجدون”، لستيفن سياز (آب 2004) من الفريق العربي للحوار الإسلامي ـ المسيحي، كتاب يهدف إلى كشف النقاب عن هذه الحركة في جذورها التاريخية، وأسسها اللاهوتية، وبرنامجها السياسي. الكتاب تعريب لما كان كتبه الكاتب بالإنكليزية، وينقسم إلى ثلاثة فصول مع مقدمة لمحمد السماك.

أبرشية دمشق Damascus

        H.E. Leo, Archbishop of Finland, in a visit to the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, scheduled during the period (23-29/11/2004). A visit program was prepared for the eminent guest, including the following items:

On the day following his arrival to the Patriarchate, a meeting is scheduled with H.B. Patriarch Ignatius, on 24/11 morning. This day will include visiting the Old City ( Umayyad Mosque, St. Ananias church,  St. Paul window, the Straight Street…), St. Paul Vision Monastery (Tal Kawkab), St. Elias church (Katana), and attending the Divine Liturgy in the evening at the Holy Cross church.  Dinner invitation at the Holy Cross Hall will follow.

On 25/11, H.E. will visit the Finish Institute , then St. George Monastery (Saydnaya), St. Takla Convent (Maaloula), A dinner will be offered at the Finish embassy in his honor.

On 26/11, H.E. will depart to Lebanon where he will share in the Thanksgiving prayer at the Balamand Monastery and he will visit Balamand University and St. John Faculty of Theology. In the evening Metropolitan  Elias Kurban (of Tripoli and Koura), will receive his guest at   dinner.

On 27/11, H.E. will depart to St. Georgius Al Humayra Monastery and will undertake a sightseeing tour to the Knights Castle. After the vesper prayer at the Monastery, H.E. will return back to Damascus.

On Sunday 28/11, The Archbishop of Finland will attend the Divine Liturgy at Al Mariamieh Cathedral. A farewell lunch will be held before his departure on 29/11.

      زيارة رئيس أساقفة فنلندا

لاحقاً للخبر الذي أوردناه سابقاً حول زيارة رئيس أساقفة فنلندا، السيد ليو، لبطريركية أنطاكية وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس، في الفترة( 23-29\11\2004)، نبين فيما يلي أهم بنود برنامج الزيارة:

يتم استقبال الضيف الكبير مساء الثلاثاء في 23\11 في مطار دمشق.

ـ في اليوم التالي، الأربعاء 24\11، يلتقي سيادة رئيس الأساقفة مع غبطة  البطريرك  إغناطيوس، ينطلق بعدها لزيارة الجامع الأموي وكنيسة حنانيا الرسول وسور دمشق القديم. في فترة ما بعد الظهر، يزور السيد ليو دير مار بولس في تل كوكب وكنيسة قطنا الجديدة، ومن ثم يحضر القداس الإلهي في كنيسة الصليب المقدس، يقام بعده حفل  استقبال خاص على شرف الضيف في قاعات الصليب المقدس.

ـ في يوم الخميس 25\11، يتوجه السيد ليو مع الوفد المرافق إلى دير القديس جاورجيوس ودير السيدة في صيدنايا، ينطلق بعدها إلى معلولا . في المساء يزور السيد ليو السفارة الفنلندية حيث يقام حفل عشاء على شرفه.

ـ في يوم الجمعة 26\22، ينطلق الوفد إلى لبنان ويتوجه إلى دير السيدة في البلمند حيث يحضر صلاة الشكر، يجول بعدها في جامعة البلمند ومنطقتها ويلتقي مع طلاب معهد القديس يوحنا الدمشقي اللاهوتي. يتضمن برنامج هذا اليوم زيارة مطرانية طرابلس والعشاء على مائدة المتروبوليت الياس قربان.

ـ في يوم السبت 27\11، يتوجه الوفد الضيف إلى دير القديس مار جاورجيوس الحميراء، يلي ذلك زيارة قلعة الحصن، تقام في المساء صلاة الغروب في دير القديس جاورجيوس، يعود بعدها الوفد الزائر إلى دمشق.

ـ صبيحة يوم الأحد في 28\11، يحضر رئيس الأساقفة صلاة السحرية والقداس الإلهي في الكاتدرائية المريمية ويتناول الغذاء على مائدة غبطة البطريرك إغناطيوس.

ـ في ختام زيارته، يغادر رئيس أساقفة فنلندا دمشق مساء الاثنين في 29\11\2004.

        The Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East issued , on November 11, a condolence statement on the occasion of President  Arafat death, expressing deep compassion and sympathy with the Palestinian People and its Leadership. High tribute was paid to Arafat’s struggle for the Palestinian cause, to which he was dedicated all his lifetime, offering unlimited love and sacrifice, never discriminating between Muslims and Christians, whom he considered as one indivisible entity- the Palestinian People- in their resistance to the Israeli occupation. Prayers were raised for the rest of his soul.

      بطريركية أنطاكية تعزي بوفاة الزعيم الفلسطيني

بتاريخ 12/11/2004 أصدرت بطريركية أنطاكية وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس بيانا عزّت فيه الشعب الفلسطيني وقيادته برئيس السلطة الفلسطينية ياسر عرفات. وجاء في البيان:

إلى الأحباء الشعب الفلسطيني وقيادته الأغراء. "طوبى لك أيها العبد الأمين، كنت أمينا على القليل، سأجعلك على الكثير. ادخل إلى فرح ربك". إنّا نتعزى بهذا القول للرب يسوع، لأن الرئيس الراحل ياسر عرفات أبو عمار حمل القضية الفلسطينية بكل كيانه وأعطاها كل عمره. لقد تميز كرئيس للسلطة الفلسطينية بحبه لكل أبناء فلسطين من دون تمييز. فالقضية عنده قضية شعب لا طائفة، فهي ليست بين مسلم وإسرائيلي إنما هي بين فلسطيني (مسلم ومسيحي) وإسرائيلي. فلم يذكر يوما المسجد الأقصى من دون كنيسة القيامة. فالقدس قبلة المسيحيين والمسلمين. نعم كان قائداً شجاعاً ومقداماً ومخلصاً ومضحياً في سبيل فلسطين. ألا أسكنه الله فسيح جنانه وجعل ذكره مؤبداً .

Thank you very much for sending me regularly "News in a week". This note is about the news you exerpt from the website of the Archdiocese in North America.

It may not have caught your attention that, in their reference to the election of three new bishops, they used the " local holy synod" when they speak of the ARCHDIOCESAN SYNOD. The new Constitution approved in October by the Antiochian Holy Synod, as well as a previous synodal decision, is clear about the name to be used. The American Metropolitan of North America and the bishops therein constitute an ARCHDIOCESAN SYNOD and not a " local holy synod". The website of the American archdiocese is using (ecclesiologically and canonically) improper words,  on which there was discussion and a clear final decision was made. I think that you should make a correction stating clearly that the Archdiocesan Synod elected the three new bishops.

قد لم تنتبهوا إلى أنهم ـ لدى ذكر انتخاب ثلاثة أساقفة جدد ـ قد استخدموا تعبير "المجمع المقدس المحلي" في حديثهم عن "مجمع الأبرشية". إن الدستور الجديد الذي تمت الموافقة عليه في تشرين الأول من قبل المجمع الأنطاكي المقدس، بالإضافة إلى قرار مجمعي سابق، لهو واضح تماماً حول الاسم الواجب استخدامه. يكوّن متروبوليت شمالي أميركا والأساقفة فيها "مجمع الأبرشية" وليس "مجمعاً محلياً مقدساً". إن الموقع الالكتروني الخاص بأبرشية أميركا يستخدم (كنسياً وقانونياً) كلمات غير مناسبة قد جرت مناقشتها واتخذ قرار نهائي بشأنها. أعتقد أنه يتوجب عليكم إجراء تصحيح يبين بوضوح بأن "مجمع الأبرشية" هو الذي انتخب الأساقفة الثلاثة.

This weekend the parish of St. John Chrysostom Antiochian Orthodox Church in York, PA opened their doors for all to come and see the house the Lord has built among them. Guests, friends and family, including their beloved Bishop ANTOUN, joined this loving orthodox community in joyful worship and fellowship to celebrate their twelfth anniversary. … the congregation expressed great thanks and praise to God for the many blessings He has given this parish over the years. Included most recently among those blessings is the completion and consecration of their new church building and Christian education wing. ..

      أقوال آبائية، التوبة

لا تطلب شيئاً في الصلاة سوى التوبة. لا تسعَ وراء العجائب والرؤى والنبؤات والمواهب، اسع فقط وراء التوبة.

التوبة تجلب لك نعمة الله، والله يُعطيك بنعمته ما تحتاج نفسك إليه من أجل الخلاص، كما يعطيكَ أيضاً كل ما أنت تحتاجه لمساعدة الآخرين.

الصلاة لا تتعب بل تريح ولكن عندما تنفذ إلى معناها. عندما تتوق نفسك إلى رحمة الله، عندما تجوع إليه، تفتح فمك كالطفل وترضع من حليبه الصافي، فتطمئن كما إلى أمٍ حنون، وتتهلّل.

      بدء صوم الميلاد

يبدأ صيام الميلاد يوم الـ15 من تشرين الثاني مدته أربعون يوماً، وقد أخذت الكنيسة فكرة الصوم من الكتاب المقدس الذي يتحدّث عن معاني الصوم وأهميته. ولعل أفضل ما يقال في هذا الصوم وكل صوم أنه دعوة ملحّة لنذكر أننا أعضاء في كنيسة مات المسيح عنها، فنزيد من القراءات في الكتاب المقدس، ونكثف من حضورنا الصلوات التي تقيمها كنيستنا.

      معايدة بعيد الفطر

بمناسبة عيد الفطر السعيد يغتنم صاحب السيادة المطران بولس يازجي هذه المناسبة ويتقدم باسمه وباسم الآباء الكهنة وكافة المؤمنين بالتهنئة بالعيد المبارك لكافة رجال الدين الإسلامي المحترمين، وجميع اخوتنا المسلمين المحتفلين بالعيد. متمنين لهم عيداً سعيداً.
